Who, What, Why?

EXPLORE

“We need the tonic of wilderness…At the same time that we are earnest to explore and learn all things, we require that all things be mysterious and unexplorable, that land and sea be indefinitely wild, unsurveyed and unfathomed by us because unfathomable. We can never have enough nature.” – Henry David Thoreau

INSPIRE

“If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more then you are a leader.” – John Quincy Adams

LEARN

“Commit yourself to lifelong learning. The most valuable asset you’ll ever have is your mind and what you put into it.” – Brian Tracy

GIVE

“Happiest are the people who give most happiness to others.” – Dennis Diderot

My passion is the ocean, conservation, photography, living life to the fullest, and being positive. I graduated with my Bachelors of Science concentrating in Marine and Coastal Ecology in the Fall of 2010 from California State University Monterey Bay. From there I worked in the Entertainment/Social Media/Marketing/Accounting field for a couple years. In 2013, I was in the Top 25 out of 600,000 people for Australia’s Best Job in the World Contest to become a Wildlife Caretaker. Then I was crowned Miss Scuba USA 2013, and earned the International titles of Miss Marine Conservation, Miss Best Diver, and 2nd Runner Up at the Miss Scuba International Pageant in Malaysia.

In 2014, I was a Lead Naturalist for the Jean-Michel Cousteau Ambassadors of the Environment program at the Ritz Carlton Reserve in Dorado Beach, Puerto Rico. It was an amazing experience, and I was thrilled to share the wonders of Puerto Rico’s ocean and terrestrial ecosystems with children and adults from all over the world!

Currently, I am working on obtaining my Masters of Science, in Leadership for Sustainability Education at Portland State University.

I started this blog in 2010 as a sort of soapbox for my inner marine biologist & my inner photographer side. Photography + Science = Chanel is a great way for me to share things to the world that I think are worthwhile! I enjoy posting about science, marine biology, environmental news, photography, funny/interesting new articles, and stories about my life lessons. In 2012, I became very focused on living a healthy, positive, fit life- which has also become a part of my blog as well. Please check out my on-going Bucket List as well!

My hope is to pass information onto you, and for you to come away from my blog learning something new. Please don’t hesitate to leave some comments so I can hear your thoughts and ideas- it means a lot! Thanks for stopping by.

  1. I originally wanted to go into marine biology. My dream was to help fix the salmon populations here in Washington. Like you said, the economy was hurting that dream so I went to plan B. If I had the opportunity to make it in marine biology though I totally would! Good Luck 😀

    1. Hey there CJ! Yes I still love Marine Bio- I’m hoping to volunteer somewhere close by so I can get my fix this year with the marine environment and its animals. Maybe the Long Beach Aquarium, Heal the Bay, or something along those lines? We shall see! What do you do now?

      1. It would be SO cool to volunteer at an aquarium! I hope that works out for you! I am now studying psychology. Starting in the Fall of 2013 I will hopefully be in the mental health counseling program here at Central Washington University.

  2. Hi Chanel, I really liked your blog for Bucket List. And thanks for following me! I’m checking out even more of your blog!

  3. Hi Chanel, we just wanted to stop by and say Thank You for following Rezich Family Kitchen, we appreciate it. We’ve been wandering around your blog as well, love the photo’s, we will be following so we can catch up and see what you’re up to next.

  4. Hi! I’m Sue, and I’m from SlimKicker, a fitness/diet app and website. I bumped into your blog today and it captured my interest!

I’m contacting you b/c we’re about to release a fitness tracker (similar to FitBit) early next year, and are looking for bloggers who would be interested in receiving 1 for free to review when it is out (negative or positive).

Would you be interested in doing this? You can email me at: sue (at) slimkicker (com) with ‘Review’ in the email heading if you are.

For your info, our website SlimKicker basically turns your fitness/diet goals into a level up game. The tracker will work with the website, and allow people to track calories burned and number of steps they walk automatically. The more they exercise, the more points they rack up! That’s basically how it will work.

Anyway, hope to hear back either way…

    – Sue

  5. Hi Chanel. Thanks for the visit and the follow. It’s very nice to “meet you” 🙂
Looking forward to follow your blog as well. Have a lovely day in Cali! (please send some sun over here… I need it!).

    Borge

    1. You’re welcome!
Well unfortunately the sun isn’t shining today..it rained all night long and it’s supposed to rain for the next couple of days. But when the sun does shine I’ll bottle some up for you! Where do you live Borge?

      1. That sounds great! Bottling up and sending some hot air is just as good at this point! 🙂 I live in Norway. That cold country in northern europe. For the last month or so the average temperature has been about 10-15 fahrenheit. So yea, hot air, sun or sand – please! 🙂

  6. Hey! Couldn’t reply to your answer due to the comment number limit.
I guess Norway is at it’s best between june and september. It depends on where in Norway you’re going though!

We could do a swap. I’ll gladly swap Norway for Cali for a few months – especially during the winter time! 🙂
