Awesome Mako Shark Footage!

Science, Thoughts

Credit: Florida Sport Fishing

When you see this video, you will understand just how eager I was to post it! You usually see awesome footage of Great White Sharks jumping out of the water, but Mako Sharks are giving them a run for their money! Sharks sure are fascinating creatures…and it’s almost the 25th Anniversary of Discovery Channel’s Shark Week! WHO ELSE IS EXCITED?! 😀

CAUTION: Video contains graphic language- put on mute if you’d like- but I get a little giggle each time the guy says “OH MY GOD” every time the shark jumps.

The video was taken in San Diego at their annual Mako catch and release (yeah for that!) fly fishing tournament. The proceeds from the tournament go towards the Pfleger Institute of Environmental Research– rock on research! The amazing jumping mako is estimated at about 800 lbs., and 10 feet long. That’s one big fish!

Here’s To Now.

I apologize for the late post…it’s been a busy couple of weeks! I ran around the Rose Bowl 3 times today- which is about 15K/ 9.3 miles. It’s a good preparation for the actual 5K marathon I’m running on June 24th!

The song I posted above pretty much sums of my view on life at the moment: Here’s To Now

Step back- and take a look at your life and see if you are happy or sad with what you are seeing. If you are happy, continue doing what puts a smile on your face and figure out what else makes you a better person. If you aren’t satisfied with your  life, then I suggest focusing on YOU and what YOU feel. People can give you a lot of varying advise, but only you know what’s best for you. So, here’s to now!

Moving on…Here’s a summary (plus PHOTOS!) of my previous weekend of fun times! I went on an early morning hike with my friends Marisa and Nelson. Mind you, I am not the type to rise early on weekends..the only time I have to sleep in..but I made an exception in order to enjoy being around nature and friends! And I am so happy I did! We saw a cute little salamander by the creek, and I even spotted a small little snake. It’s nice to know that I only have to travel a couple of miles from my doorstep to see nature up close and personal.

The next day I woke up early again and met up with my mom and grandma in San Diego- my grandma lives in San Diego so it was nice to spend some time with her. Through my mother’s work- we got a Box at the Padres Baseball Game! It was definitely the best experience I ever had at a game! Free awesome food, unlimited alcohol, comfortable seats, lounge, and even a dessert cart rolled through that looked like something out of your dreams?!  IT WAS AWESOME! Definitely felt like high class royalty. It was also the same day as the solar eclipse- which I kind of saw afterwards at a bar we hung out at after the game. I wished I had remembered about the eclipse so I was better prepared to view it..oh well..I guess I’ll just have to wait another 11 years to see it properly!

Please flip through these photos and tell me which ones you like best! 🙂

Dreams Dreams Dreams

Photography, Thoughts

In and out of sleep while listening to the ocean crash into the shore.

I’m the person that would come to school and make all my friends listen to my crazy vivid dreams from the night before. I just remember EVERYTHING! I feel lucky because most people can’t remember any of their dreams…do you remember your dreams at all?

Lately, my dreams have been super long and vivid. Sometimes they have people in it that I would rather not see or interact with in real life, and that kind of throws off my day when I wake up. Other times I dream about people I don’t see too often- and wish it was real life because they are awesome!

My best friend Courtney used to read lots of books about dreams and tell me what they meant when I explained them in detail at school- which prompted me to get some dream de-coding books of my own back in the day. I haven’t really read up on what my dreams mean in a LONG time, but I am kind of intrigued to start again. Our conscious is a wild beast that I don’t think we will really ever understand it.

I’ve got some big dreams/goals for next year that I’m excited about. I can’t believe that this year is almost already halfway done..holy cow time flies! I’m looking forward to putting on a fantastic California Philharmonic Summer Concert Season at the Santa Anita Race Track, Dominican Republic in Nov for my cousin’s wedding, and much much more 🙂 It’s always nice to have something to look forward to- to keep you pushing on through out the days!

I’m planning on going hiking Saturday morning, then down to San Diego on  to party in a Box at PetCo Park and watch the Padres play some good ole’ baseball. I’ll have photos to share next week of those adventures! Be on the look out 😀

This is the first item listed on My Bucket List – to skydive anywhere in the world. Here is what I wrote in the submission the email so you can understand why I really want to win this contest:

Hello Lesley,

I was so excited to see that you have this amazing opportunity to Skydive in San Diego!!

As you can see on my blog- the first thing I have listed on my Bucket List is to skydive (anywhere in the world) :

If you read earlier on my blog- I posted about how 2011 was a whirlwind of change in my life. I’ve realized that: 1) You can’t be afraid to try new things, 2) I need to surround myself with people who make me happy (and more importantly distance those negative people in my life), and 3) Live life each day to the maximum- it’s too short to live it any less.

I’m changing myself for the better, and what an awesome way it would be to start the new year with jumping out of a plane with no strings attached 🙂 ?! I’m not going to lie, it does scare me a bit… but I’d be so upset with myself if I never tried it! Life is about stepping out of your comfort zone, and taking advantage of trying new things. If you make my dream a reality- I’d cherish it more than you will ever know.

I live in Pasadena (LA), and visit San Diego quite frequently since my Mom just moved there towards the end of last year. Southern California is my home and heart.

Also my 24th birthday is March 15- and this would be the ultimate gift package (not to mention a check off the ole’ bucket list)!!! I’m ready for an adventure that I’ll never forget.

Thank you for hosting this contest- My heart is skipping with even the slight possibility of skydiving this year 😀

My First Submission to a Photo Contest- Find out the result!

If you are an avid reader of mine- you’ll know that I asked for some suggestions last month with a couple photos I wanted to enter in a contest.

These photo submissions were for the Birch Aquarium Underwater Parks Day Photo Contest. The only decent underwater photos I have taken  are from scuba diving on the Great Barrier Reef, in Queensland, Australia. I truly love being submerged underwater…surrounded by schools of fish and coral reefs- a surreal and BEAUTTIIIFUL experience. If you’ve never been scuba diving in your life- you haven’t lived. Put it on your bucket list- trust me.

I got to post up to 5 photographs- which of course I didn’t hesitate if this was an option for my first photo contest 🙂  The category I able to submit to was Marine Protected Areas (MPA’s). The Great Barrier Reef is one of the largest MPA’s in the entire world- so lucky me that I had some awesome photos from my study abroad experience!

The winners were announced yesterday…and drum rolllllllllllllllllllllll….I didn’t win 😦

I had high hopes- but I wasn’t completely bummed. The Aquarium on their blog said that they were going to post a couple favorites besides the winning entries the  next day (which was today). So when I went onto the Birch Aquarium blog- I started scrolling through the 8 favorite photos…and low and behold.. I HAD A PHOTO THERE! Not all hope was lost 🙂 after all.

Here is the link to the Aquarium’s blog post showing their favorites: More Photos: Underwater Parks Day Photo Contest

You will see on that page- the photo shown below which I titled: Jail Break!

I thought it was a fitting title because the little fish look like escaped convicts in their white and black striped attire 🙂 don’t you agree??

Jail Break!

Well even though I did win the competition- second best sounds pretty darn good to me for my first time in a contest! Smiles all around today 😀 Now I’m looking forward to my next photo contest….know of any good ones? I take a lot of nature shots- both digital and film. Thanks!

Help Me Pick- I’m Entering A Photo Contest!

Photography, Thoughts

Alright- So I’m entering the Birth Aquarium Underwater Parks Day Photo Contest.

This is the first photo competition I have ever entered- I’m super excited 🙂

The only time I’ve taken awesome underwater photos was at the Great Barrier Reef in Australia (not too shabby of a place I might add 😉 ). I rented an underwater digital camera for $50 bucks when I went on a dive boat- and it was the smartest thing I did! I came back with fantastic photos- luckily the visibility was EXCELLENT and the sun was out and the fish were playing.

I can enter up to 5 photos- and I have 4 FOR SURE and 2 QUESTIONABLE.

IF you guys could PLEASE help me pick the best of the 2 below–It will be greatly appreciated- Tell me why too 🙂

3-Million Year Old Whale Found Hiding Under The San Diego Zoo!

While  workers were constructing a storm water equalization tank last week at the San Diego Zoo, they dug up something to their surprise.

A 3-million-year-old whale fossilized skeleton. Not to mention the skeleton is pretty well intact.

Labeling the Whale Bones

It’s funny that we, humasn, were not even evolved on this planet yet when this whale was alive and swimming the wide open seas.

The baleen whale is about 24-feet long, with even an intact skull!

Scientists say that the age of the whale dates back to The Great American Interchange. This is when a range of land and marine animals migrated between North and South America. Much of the central-west region of North America was underwater- believe it or not! Who knows which way the whale was traveling, north or south- I’m sure it would have loved the warm waters of South America though 🙂
